During this week of intense reflection on how we can turn things around – literally returning and making atonement and creating some completion out of difficult situations – the Torah reminds us that at times God’s presence will be hidden from us.
When we are so consumed with things that distract us from our better selves, from the actions that elevate our personalities towards the integrity and righteousness and humility we are all aiming for, then it seems pretty understandable that deeper meanings will be hidden.
At the heart of Jewish teachings lays the simple idea that if we stray in our actions we will have trouble finding connections in our minds, hearts, and spirits.
Let our actions lead our hearts. Start with doing better and our thoughts and emotions will follow. Then we may encounter deeper meaning.
Wishing everyone a meaningful week of turning towards our better selves, a sweet and good New Year to all,
Jonathan
