This week we honor and celebrate the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and we read about our own original social justice leader, Moses.
From our experiences as slaves we learn throughout the Torah that “we should not oppress the stranger because we were strangers in Egypt”. That experience of our ancestors serves to remind us of our need to have sympathy for those who are oppressed everywhere.
Moses’ sense of justice was so advanced that with no suffering in his background, he grew up as a prince in Pharaoh’s household, Moses still identified with the oppressed and struck down an Egyptian taskmaster.
Let us aim to learn from Moses and better develop sympathy for everyone as we continue to seek justice for all.
