Today was the absolute worst day ever
And don’t try to convince me that
There’s something good in every day
Because, when you take a closer look,
This world is a pretty evil place.
Some goodness does shine through once in a while
Satisfaction and happiness don’t last.
And it’s not true that
It’s all in the mind and heart
True happiness can be attained
Only if one’s surroundings are good
It’s not true that good exists
I’m sure you can agree that
It’s all beyond my control
And you’ll never in a million years hear me say
Today was a very good day
Now read it from bottom to top, the other way.
Maimonides writes that “[Freedom of] choice has been granted to every person… This concept is a fundamental principle and a pillar of the Torah and its commandments (Laws of Repentance 5:1).
When Adar enters, we increase in our joy (Ta’anit 29a). We can’t necessarily change our circumstances but we can choose more enlightened perspectives that lead to joy and well-being.
In an effort to help us achieve more happiness inducing thoughts and perspectives, please enjoy the following great lecture by Rabbi Sack’ (7 Principles to Inner Happiness”- http://rabbisacks.org/true-path-inner-happiness/)
May we all have a doubled month of Adar full of joy and success. Shabbat Shalom!
